Catholic education:
mission, challenge and support
A guide to eighteen key resources, connecting the Church’s teaching with the questions governors and trustees ask.

This guide brings together the twelve resources listed by the Diocese of Westminster Education Service with six later texts relevant to Catholic school governance. Each entry links to the individual text and offers questions for governors’ challenge and support.
The collection includes encyclicals, a council declaration, education guidance, papal messages, a working document and a congress communiqué. Read each in its historical context, alongside later Church teaching and applicable diocesan guidance.
Our central question: How do we ensure that our Catholic mission shapes children’s experience, strengthens our decisions and deepens the support we offer leaders?

Record one action, who will follow it up and when the board will review its impact.
A prayer for wise and faithful governance
God of wisdom and love,
guide us in the service of our Catholic schools.
Help us to understand the teaching entrusted to us,
to listen to the people we serve,
and to recognise your image in every child.
Give us courage to ask thoughtful questions,
humility to learn from others,
and generosity in the support we offer our leaders.
May our decisions strengthen faith and learning,
protect those who are easily overlooked,
and build communities of dignity, justice and hope.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
