Our History

EducareM grew out of the need to articulate a clear definition of the 1988 Education Reform Act’s requirement that every young person of school age follow a curriculum which “(2) (a) promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society; and (b) prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.” This became known as the SMSC requirement for the Nation’s pupils, regardless of whether they had any faith background or not.

EducareM was preceded by a Charity known as the Hertfordshire Religious Education Development Trust, which pioneered ways in which the National Curriculum and Religious Education could be contextualised within the SMSC statutory requirement. As the work of the HREDT developed, the trustees and their director were invited to speak to members of the House of Lords to explain how this section of the Education Reform Act could be delivered. As a result of these frequent and very fruitful discussions it became clear that HREDT was too local and needed to become a National Charity. Members of the House of Lords gave it their full support and were instrumental in its establishment. Funding was secured and EducareM was established in 1997. By offering Ofsted, the government of the time and Headteachers a clear definition of what SMSC looked like and how it might be delivered across all Key Stages, EducareM pioneered a holistic training programme nationally.
